Our Story
Who we are
CUC RAPAD Central West Queensland is a place-based education initiative created to ensure people living in rural and remote communities can access higher education without having to leave home. As part of the national Country Universities Centre network, we provide free, locally owned study hubs that support students enrolled with any Australian university or higher education provider.
Our focus is simple: bring opportunity closer, support students locally, and strengthen communities through education.
The CUC network
The Country Universities Centre network is made up of community-owned centres operating across regional New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. Each centre is locally governed and shaped by the needs of its community, while being supported by CUC Central, which provides shared systems, expertise, and national coordination.
This network model allows local staff to focus on what matters most: students, learning, and community connection.
Why we are here
People living in regional and remote Australia face real barriers to higher education. Distance from campus, the cost of relocation, limited internet access, and social isolation all make studying harder than it should be.
Too often, solutions are designed for regional communities rather than with them. CUC RAPAD CWQ exists because our region believed there was a better way: a locally led, community-owned model that supports people to study where they live.
Why Central West Queensland
CUC RAPAD CWQ was established through the shared vision of the RAPAD councils and with support from the Australian Government. Our region spans almost a quarter of Queensland and includes communities where access to tertiary education has historically been limited.
By creating a network of eight study hubs across Barcaldine, Bedourie, Birdsville, Blackall, Boulia, Jundah, Longreach, and Winton, we are making higher education visible, accessible, and achievable across the Central West.
From idea to reality
The Longreach hub was officially opened in December 2024, with students welcomed from February 2025. Since then, our network has grown rapidly, supporting students across a wide range of disciplines including health, education, accounting, community services, and more.
Each hub provides quiet study spaces, reliable technology, and access to local staff who understand the realities of studying in regional and remote areas.
What we do
CUC RAPAD CWQ operates dedicated study hubs that offer:
- Free, modern study spaces
- High-speed internet and reliable technology
- Access for students from any university or course
- Local academic and pastoral support
- A welcoming environment that reduces isolation and builds confidence
Our hubs do not replace universities. Instead, they bridge the gap between students and their institutions, providing the space, support, and stability students need to succeed.
Looking ahead
CUC RAPAD Central West Queensland is building foundations for the future: stronger local workforces, more educational pathways, and communities where opportunity is not limited by postcode.
By supporting people to stay, study, and succeed locally, we are helping shape a more resilient and connected Central West Queensland.
